PGS/PGD

If you’re pursuing IVF and want to increase your chances of success—or if you have a known genetic risk—embryo genetic testing may be the right step for you. At Conceive Fertility Center in Dallas–Fort Worth, TX, we offer advanced screening services called PGS (Preimplantation Genetic Screening) and PGD (Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis) to help identify the healthiest embryos for transfer and reduce the risk of miscarriage or inherited conditions.

What is PGS?

PGS (preimplantation genetic screening) tests embryos created through IVF to check for the correct number of chromosomes, a condition known as aneuploidy. Embryos with abnormal chromosome counts are a leading cause of failed implantation and miscarriage. UNC Fertility+1

What is PGD?
PGD (preimplantation genetic diagnosis) goes a step further. When one or both parents carry a known genetic mutation or chromosomal rearrangement, PGD tests embryos for that specific condition so that unaffected embryos may be selected for transfer. New England Fertility Institute+1

Who Should Consider PGS/PGD?
Embryo genetic testing may be recommended if you have any of the following:

  • Maternal age 35 or older (increased risk of chromosomal abnormalities)
  • Recurrent pregnancy loss or multiple failed IVF cycles
  • Known genetic mutation in one or both partners
  • Male-factor infertility with severe sperm issues
  • Desire to reduce the number of transferred embryos and risk of multiples

How is the Testing Performed?

  1. Embryos are created through your IVF cycle and cultured to the blastocyst stage (typically Day 5).
  2. A small number of cells are taken from the embryo via biopsy—without harming its ability to develop.
  3. The cells are analyzed in our lab to check chromosome number (PGS) or specific gene mutations (PGD).
  4. A euploid (chromosomally normal) or unaffected embryo is selected for transfer.
  5. Any remaining healthy embryos may be frozen for future use.

Studies show that these tests can reduce miscarriage risk and help shorten the time to pregnancy. Advanced Fertility Center of Chicago™+1
